Have you ever noticed that while your face tends to age from year to year, many celebrities, and even some of your friends and acquaintances, have learned how to stop the lines of time dead in their tracks? And though you may not find it desirable or even attractive to own the skin of a newborn babe when, in fact, you just celebrated your 60th or 72nd birthday, a modified version would not be entirely unwelcome, would it? Make a note we are not talking major facelift, here—only “dermal fillers.” This is for those of you who still see some jawline, and whose eyes are not puffed out beyond recognition. What you are looking for is a way to erase a line here, an indentation there. Two things to keep in mind is the fact that these are temporary fixes, and that because that is true, using fillers as a routine solution can become an expensive proposition. Now the question is, what kind of dermal filler is right for you, considering the laundry list of possibilities. Science is working hard to find better and more permanent solutions, considering we are in the beginning phases of a multi-billion dollar industry. Meanwhile, here are a few of the most popular options available today at your local dermatologist’s office: ArteFill - For nasolabial folds on both sides of your nose-to-mouth area, this is the first and only FDA-approved injectable wrinkle filler designed for the correction of smile lines that doesn’t get absorbed into the body. Before using, a skin test is required to establish that you are not allergic to the bovine collagen it contains. This product is given in two treatments, and lasts several years. Captique – Made from hyaluronic acid derived from bacteria, this product is for facial wrinkles and folds. One treatment lasts for four to six months before being absorbed into the skin. Cosmoderm/Cosmoplast – Human collagen bio-engineered from cultured skin cells plus lidocaine, this product is for soft tissue defects such as wrinkles and acne scars. No skin test is required, and one treatment lasts four to six months. Hylaform – Also made from hyaluronic acid, derived from rooster combs, Hylaform corrects facial wrinkles and folds, and lasts for about three months. Juvederm Ultra and Juvederm Ultra Plus – Hyaluronic acid made from bacteria corrects facial wrinkles and folds around the nose and mouth for six to 12 months. Radiesse – FDA-approved treatment for facial fat loss in HIV patients. Also used off-label for facial wrinkles and folds. One treatment lasts one to two years. Restylane/Perlane – For the treatment of facial wrinkles and folds and for defining the borders of the lips. One treatment lasts up to six months. Sculptra – FDA-approved for facial fat loss in HIV patients. Also used off-label for facial wrinkles and folds. Given in three treatments, it lasts up to two years. Silikon 1000 – This is medical grade silicone oil (synthetic) and is an FDA-approved treatment for retinal detachment, but it is also used off-label for facial folds and wrinkles, and for facial fat loss in HIV patients. Given in several injections, it lasts indefinitely. Keep in mind, we are not recommending any of these for your personal use. However, if you decide to go ahead with one or more of these products, first speak to others who have used these methods, and most important of all, talk to one or more reputable doctors to get their unbiased professional opinion. One final note: As a result of any procedure, maintain realistic expectations. Be aware you will never again look like you did at 21—and why would you want to? You are, after all, a new and improved version of that person you were way back then. Some things improve with age.Comments (0)
