“How to Live to 150” is the title of a recent Barbara Walters Special on ABC in which the 76-year old TV icon interviewed a series of scientists whose business it is to slow down the aging process in our lifetime, “mostly [at this point] through the replenishing of organs.” According to Walters, only 25% of our life expectancy depends on our genes, so there are things we can do on our own to keep old age at bay. Besides the obvious diet and exercise regimens, there is also the need to do specific tasks, like standing up from a sitting position without the use of our hands. Doing squats on a regular basis is a very effective way of strengthening our leg muscles and allowing us to rise to our feet—a simple action we used to take for granted. The show took Walters to Alcor in Arizona where a surprising number of people have been paying upwards of $150,000 to be frozen at the point of death on the chance they might be cured at some later time when they can be revived and cured of whatever it was that killed them. There have been rumors circulating for years that Walt Disney was one of the first of those people to order this procedure. For those on a budget, you can get a freeze on your head only, which, let’s face it, is the prime cut of your personal real estate, anyway. The message the audience was able to take away from this show was that with the combined efforts of genetics, science and technology, and your own healthy lifestyle, you can look to a longer future for yourself, no matter your current age. It also helps to be optimistic, and to be spiritual (albeit not necessarily religious), according to a few energetic centegenarians that Walters interviewed on the show. Comments (0)
