For more proof that sixty is sexy, read on. The 2008 Senior Games took place over a four-day period in late February/early March in the Village of Wellington, located in Palm Beach County, Florida. The games and activities were planned specifically for Boomers and seniors of 50 and over. This year’s event marked the second year in a row that the retirement community put on this exciting event, which is designed “to promote healthy and active lifestyles in our community, increase participation and activities for seniors, and allow seniors to socialize in a fun group setting! The top five winners of each age group would be eligible to participate in the Florida Senior Games State Championships held in December 2008.” Participants had a wide range of choices at which to test their mettle, including: archery, badminton, ballroom dancing, basketball, billiards, bingo, darts, dominoes, fishing, softball, swimming, Texas hold ‘em poker, tennis, table tennis, and volleyball. There was a level of activity to match virtually any level of fitness. No excuses accepted here. The Village of Wellington Senior Games is sponsored by the William H. Donner Foundation, and provides an excellent model for retirement communities that offer physically and mentally challenging activities for their residents. For those men and women over 60 who choose to spend their later years residing in gated communities with their peer group, it is reassuring to know that there continue to be opportunities available to stretch yourself in ways that your never have, or to continue to participate in activities that you enjoy. Consider old age as not so much the end of a way of life, but the beginning of a new one.Comments (0)
